Advantages of an online CMBA degree
Numerous business schools now offer Corporate Master of Business Administration (CMBA) degree programs online. If you’re weighing online and traditional programs, consider some of these benefits of the online format before you apply for and enroll in a program.
For many prospective students, the most obvious benefit of an online CMBA degree is the geographic freedom it provides. Instead of being bound to a particular city, you can study from wherever you currently reside. Especially for CMBA programs, this flexibility is key for students who are studying alongside their work in the corporate world. Increasingly, top business schools are setting up online versions of their CMBA programs. As a result, it’s now possible to earn a degree from a well-known institution without relocating.
In many cases, students in online CMBA programs have greater flexibility in deciding when they will complete their coursework. For example, streaming lectures may be available throughout the week, making it possible for working students to watch their lectures in the evenings or even during their commutes. In addition, online CMBA degrees typically vary in their length, from as little as one year to up to two years or more. As a result, students can study at their own pace, adjusting their study time around their home and work responsibilities.
Admission and tuition
In some cases, online institutions have less stringent admission requirements than traditional business schools, or may waive GMAT or GRE requirements, which is a draw for many students. Given that online CMBA programs often require lower overhead costs than brick-and-mortar institutions, it’s no surprise tuition is often lower. This is not always the case, but many online programs do have relatively lower tuition fees than a comparable on-campus program. And many also offer the opportunity to apply for financial aid or qualify for scholarships. Some also offer “pay-by-course” convenience.
Critics of online learning cite the “x factor” of not meeting fellow students in person. However, with the increasing popularity of such online programs, many online degree programs now provide ample opportunity for student interaction. Students may discuss projects in online forums or collaborate on group projects via Skype. Some supporters of online CMBA degree programs also posit that the neutral atmosphere of an online forum makes it easier for all students to participate. By contrast, with the limitations of a classroom, a few students who quickly raise their hands may dominate group discussion.
Naturally, there are many personal factors to consider when selecting an online Corporate MBA. In brief, most students identify the primary benefits of these programs as the geographic and scheduling flexibility, the lower tuition cost and the particular conditions of the online learning format. When choosing an online CMBAdegree, consider the specific features of individual schools as well as the general benefits of online programs versus in-person degrees.
