What do I need for an online CMBA program?

Undergraduate degree requirements

A business undergraduate degree is not necessarily required. In fact, statistics indicate that the majority of students entering an online Corporate Master of Business Administration (CMBA) program have a variety of undergraduate backgrounds. Engineering, humanities and health sciences are some examples of the undergraduate degrees acquired by students who are accepted to graduate degree programs in business. However, it is not unusual for the undergraduate course of study to directly correlate with the field of interest in which the student hopes to gain future employment.

Online CMBA program admission

After acquiring an undergraduate degree, and choosing a graduate school, you must complete the application forms for that institution and pay the required fee. You must also provide official transcripts as part of the process. In addition to what you studied as an undergraduate, admissions committees also generally require a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Many schools also require Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores. Overall, your required admission documentation demonstrates your ability to meet the demands of a graduate program.

Letters of recommendation

An online CMBA program typically requires the inclusion of at least two letters of recommendation as part of the CMBA admission requirements. These letters give the admissions committee a personalized overview of prospective students. The letters may come from former professors, current or past employers, clergy or colleagues, and must offer insight into the various abilities, achievements and talents of the candidate along with character and personality traits.

Admission essay

Many business schools require that students submit an essay or statement of purpose or complete a questionnaire that details the applicant's purpose for acquiring a graduate degree. The essay or statement demonstrates the applicant’s communication, writing and critical thinking skills, while providing a chance to express future goals and desires. Statements are typically shorter and basically expect candidates to explain how entering and completing the program serves to meet future goals. Length and other essay requirements differ among institutions of higher learning.

In addition to the basic list of documentation required by online MBA programs, schools may also require the prospective student to include an employment history as a means of gauging dedication, experience and possible earned distinctions. Upon completing the application process, some admissions committees may then select students to attend a formal interview, which provides faculty members with the opportunity to gain a better perspective of the student on a more personal level.
