Corporate and government efforts to boost hiring of military veterans have increased in recent years, with the demand for former members of the armed forces growing at a steady pace. More corporations and agencies are hiring veterans in a range of industries including technology, healthcare, finance, law, law enforcement and pharmaceuticals, and many companies hiring veterans are run by veterans. Companies are not only encouraged to hire veterans but want to support them. Businesses are learning that veterans make great employees and that hiring veterans can bring immediate advantages.
Companies hiring veterans quickly realize that military members have proven leadership skills, possess excellent personnel management and communications skills, are team players, are globally experienced, adapt easily to change, can think fast on their feet, and are comfortable working in high-risk environments. A recent study by the Apollo Research Institute showed that among 800 hiring managers, 81 percent rated military employees as being stronger or much stronger in demonstrating teamwork skills than civilian employees. Seventy-seven percent said that military employees are more reliable and have a better work ethic. The same study showed that employers believe military experience improves leadership skills.
As of 2016, 20.9 million men and women, or about 9 percent of the civilian adult population, are veterans. The Joint Chiefs of Staff project that more than 200,000 service members will leave active service each year through 2019. To help those who have served in the nation’s armed forces transition their expertise and skills from the battlefield to the business world, more colleges and universities are catering to military veterans with online Master of Business Administration programs.
As with civilian MBA students, there are significant benefits for veterans who obtain an MBA degree, including advanced business acumen, higher salaries and networking opportunities. In a 2016 GMAC poll of B-school alumni, 95 percent said the business education met their expectations for personal development, 93 percent are satisfied with the knowledge and technical skills they gained, 81 percent said it met their goal for a salary increase, and 83 percent said it helped them change occupations.
