Yes, financial aid is available to those who qualify. To apply for financial aid, please go online at www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete your Federal Application for Aid. This application allows the Financial Aid Office to determine what grants/loans you may be eligible for. FIU's Institution Code is 009635.
If you would like help with the actual FAFSA application, please contact FAFSA at 1-800-433-3243. FAFSA will send you an email within 48 hours of you filing with your Student Aid Report (SAR).
The student will receive an email notification from FAFSA within 48 hours of completion indicating that the FAFSA has been processed. Within 5-7 business days of completion, FIU will receive the processed FAFSA. Once FIU receives the FAFSA, FIU will notify the student via the To-Do list on their FIU student portal if any verification documents are required.
There are two types of loans available to grad students: unsubsidized Stafford and Grad PLUS loans. The Stafford loan is federally regulated with a 6.8% interest rate, and you do not start repayment of principal until six months after graduation or you drop below half-time. The Grad PLUS loan is based on your credit score and has a 7.9% interest rate. The total award per semester for the Stafford loan is $10,250 additional funds being offered in Grad PLUS loans. The financial assistance offered through the University requires U.S. citizenship or permanent U.S. residency to qualify for any federal or state aid. Need-based federal and state assistance is not available to international or ineligible non-citizens.
Recipients of federal loans must meet the following criteria:
- + Completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) Application for each academic year
- + Demonstrate financial need
- + Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
- + Be registered with Selective Service, if required
- + Admitted to a degree seeking program or an eligible certificate program
- + Be enrolled at least half time (6 credits/undergraduates-5 credits/graduates) when loan proceeds are received
- + Not be in default on a previous student loan or owe a repayment on a previous federal financial aid award received at any institution
- + Applicant cannot have an adverse credit history (for Graduate Plus loans only)

No. The university requires a record of your assignment within the course. Submitting your assignment in the course shows documentation of completing the course requirements.

Please note that online courses may require a virtual proctored exam(s) through ProctorU. In order to determine whether your course requires a proctored exam(s), check your syllabus upon gaining access to the course. It is the student's responsibility to be aware of the exam dates and times to make appropriate arrangements.

Scholarly writing uses peer-reviewed sources and edited publications including journals and books. Peer-reviewed articles are reviewed or judged by a panel of experts, which include scientific or scholarly peers. Please see the attachment "Scholarly Writing" for more information.
Yes. The University is regionally accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees.
In many cases, online courses are taught by the same faculty who teach face-to-face courses at Florida International University. Some courses are taught by professionals from the community who are experts in their field.
Time required to complete coursework each week can vary considerably from student to student. However, a student should on average allot 10-12 hrs per course per week to complete each week's assignments.
You'll need access to and should be proficient on a personal computer, have access to the Internet with a browser compatible with Canvas, and be familiar with the Microsoft Office suite of products. You can test your computer with the Browser Requirements Check to ensure its compatibility.
The required system profile for the personal computer includes:

Yes. Commencement ceremonies are held three times a year (Fall, Spring and Summer). Students should check the Commencement Guide at the address given below to find the time of their commencement. Each commencement ceremony lasts approximately two hours. In order to participate, the student must confirm their participation to their corresponding ceremony within PantherSoft under ACADEMICS. This may be obtained along with the Commencement Guide (of which it is part) at commencement.fiu.edu.
The Commencement Guide will answer most questions about the commencement process but a few points should be mentioned. There is a deadline for confirmation to the ceremony. Please consult the above website for the deadlines at the beginning of the semester in which you expect to graduate.
The student can apply for graduation on PantherSoft under ACADEMICS. Students must be enrolled in at least 1 graduate credit the semester they apply to graduate. Before applying for graduation, the graduate student should perform a grad check, which can be done by checking their "Panther Degree Audit" under "Academics" at https://login.fiu.edu/myfiu/.
